Hi Salt Spring Island and the World,
We are Ben Corno and Kaleigh Barton of Heavenly Roots, a blossoming organic vegetable farm in the Fulford Valley, on Salt Spring Island. This summer we began renting 2 acres of land behind the Burgoyne Valley Community Farm from the Salt Spring Island Farmlands Trust, a society which 'create[s] access to affordable land, while offering other compatible agricultural uses for the community'.
Buying local is getting easier every season. Our future is to offer great vegetables at the market, and in the produce aisle by the summer of 2015. We will grow carrots, beets, turnips, onions, garlic, potatoes and head lettuce.
We Need a Fence
Prior to growing cover-crop or vegetables on the land, we need to install 1180 feet of 72” high deer fence, a local standard, to keep the animals from coming into our crops and feasting on them at nighttime. We would like to buy the fence on-island; the cost of the fence and posts is $2520.
Once the deer fence is up, we can concentrate on the irrigation, and breaking ground. It would be advantageous to have the fence up by the early winter so the soil can have vegetables and cover-crop planted in the spring.
Vegetables for Cash
You will receive 100% of your contribution amount in yummy, organic vegetables as soon as they are ready next summer.
Our Fundraising goal is $3000.
